“Massillon Steel” Author Visit
Join the Massillon Public Library for an author talk with Angela Watkins, to discuss her new book “Massillon Steel: 1937 Columbia Heights Massacre.”
In her new book, Watkins takes a journalistic view of the 1937 Little Steel Strike. The book examines the events of July 11 and July 12, which resulted in the deaths of two men, scores of injuries, and mass arrests. It also focuses on the brave stance taken by city officials and Massillon police in trying to prevent a rogue element from taking matters into their own hands.
Angela Watkins worked in the media as a local broadcast journalist (WTIG Massillon, WHBC Canton and WHLO Akron) and as a local newspaper reporter (The Massillon Independent and the Akron Beacon Journal). She then transitioned her writing skills to marketing, eventually working for No. 1 cosmetic company L’Oreal USA. Since that time, Angela is now retired and continues to use her journalistic skills writing about local history that has made a national impact.
