Home Fire Safety

Learn important fire safety tips to help your family prepare for and respond to emergencies at home.

Emergency Action Plan

Know the Alarm Sound

Teach children what their home’s smoke detector sounds like and explain that it means “danger, get out fast”.

Two Ways Out

Identify two exits (doors and windows) for every room in the home.

Stop, Drop, and Roll

Practice this technique together: if clothes catch fire, Stop (do not run), Drop to the floor, and Roll back and forth while covering your face with your hands

What Firefighters Look Like

Firefighters in full gear (masks, heavy coats, helmets, and oxygen tanks) can look and sound scary. Teach kids that this equipment is just to keep them safe, and that they should shout out and go to the firefighter if they are found.

Fire Prevention and Burns

Tools of the Trade

Teach kids that matches, lighters, and candles are tools for adults only. If they find one, they should leave it alone and tell a grown-up right away.

The 3-Foot Rule

Kids should stay at least 3 feet away from anything that gets hot, like space heaters, stoves, and fireplaces.

Burn Care

If they get a minor burn, they should run it under cool water for 3 to 5 minutes and tell an adult immediately.

Escaping the House

Crawl Low Under Smoke

Smoke and heat rise, making the safest air near the floor.

Feel the Door

Before opening a closed door, children should use the back of their hand to feel it. If it is hot, they should use their secondary exit (like a window).

Never Hide

Emphasize that in a fire, they should never hide in closets, under beds, or behind furniture.

Meeting Outside and Calling for Help

Designate a Meeting Place

Choose a safe, permanent spot outside your home (like a specific tree, mailbox, or neighbor's house) where the family will meet.

Get Out and Stay Out

Once outside, they must never go back into a burning building for any reason—toys, pets, or family members.

Dialing 9-1-1

Kids should know how to call 911 (or your local emergency number).

Outdoor Fire Safety

Learn how to stay safe around campfires, fire pits, and other outdoor fires.

Campfires & Fire Pits

Teach kids to maintain a safe distance from fire pits and never to throw paper or garbage into the flames.

Safe Roasting

If they are roasting marshmallows, make sure they sit down and hold roasting sticks away from their bodies and faces.

Extinguishing

Always thoroughly extinguish campfires with water and stir the ashes until they are completely cold before leaving the area.
